St. Kitts & Nevis
The smallest sovereign state in the Americas, the island dynamic duo of Saint Kitts and Nevis were among the first Caribbean islands to be settled by Europeans, mostly English and French. Historic sugar plantations dominate the lush tropical landscape. As a sovereign state, they’ve cut through a lot of the red tape for getting married on the island. All you need is a valid passport or photo ID, birth certificate, and an affidavit confirming single status (or original divorce decree or death certificate). No translations required, and it’s just $200 for the license fee. Best part – ceremonies can be held just about anywhere on the island: historic churches, romantic ruins, the grounds of your hotel, and of course, on the beach.
While there is a whole range of options for accommodations, we love the romance of Ottley’s Plantation Inn, a 17th century sugar plantation on 35 acres of lawns and gardens. And of course, there is the giant Marriott located steps away from a perfect beach. Though smaller and quieter, Nevis has another gorgeous plantation – Montpelier Plantation, which is regularly named a top resort hotel in the Caribbean by Travel & Leisure and Conde Nast Traveller. Nevis itself is an island made for history buffs and adventurers. It’s the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton and, Montpelier, is where Horatio Nelson courted and married Fanny Nisbett.
For honeymooners and vacationers, St. Kitts and Nevis is the perfect little package of activities, history, and the mellow Caribbean culture. There are fun bars, historic plantations-turned restaurants, water activities – including world-class diving. For nightlife, Basseterre has two large casinos, and we like Mr. X’s Shiggidy Shack beachfront bars for karaoke and beach bonfires.
